    I will let the other reviewers go into detail as to why they loved this movie. Let me just say, it is worth seeing and will deliver much more than you anticipated. One review said it is “Sexier than sex”. I wondered what that possibly could have meant and initially brushed that description off as overly dramatic. But, nope, that pretty much gets it right. By the way, there is no coarse language that I remember in the film, no nudity, no graphic violence. It does so much more by playing with your mind. It is a subtle movie, so don’t try watching it with a bunch of rowdy friends. This is a film to be watched alone, with one other special person, or with a small, select group of people at a time.

    I love this movie. I’ve always liked anything that Auteuil does so was bound to watch this and what a feast it is. My one regret is the movie is b/w although you hardly notice once you are into it because it’s so charming a story.

    I was particularly struck by the use of the knife-throwing act to become an erotic experience – what a clever theme.

    I do not object to the ending that some call sugary. I think it is absolutely the right ending. We don’t have to have all fantasy movies ending as tragedies just to please people who don’t like happy endings. There are far too many movies that twist the story to ensure the ending is as miserable as possible which has been “fashionable” for some time and is becoming so tedious. The French are as much guilty of this as any others, seeming to all too often delight in dismal endings. So it was pleasing to discover that they did manage to find a happy ending for this delightful fantasy. After all, it is a fantasy, not meant to be real life, so we don’t have to have everyone ending up miserable as sin or proudly wallowing in some idea that a movie is always better if everything ends in pain, loss and sorrow. Accolades to the writer and director for ensuring this movie at least could leave us feeling fulfilled and happy instead of dismally accepting life can’t ever really be happy – which is completely illogical. Fashion isn’t everything.

    Das ist einer der Sätze, in denen zu Beginn des Filmes die knapp 22jährige Adèle (Vanessa Paradis) ihr bisheriges Leben beschreibt. Vor kleinem Publikum wird sie von einer anonymen Frau befragt, ein Gericht? Eine Behörde, weil das Etablissement in dem sie zuletzt gearbeitet hat, “wegen der Hostessen” geschlossen wurde?
    Es ist unwichtig, wir erfahren, dass sie von zuhause weggegangen ist, um mit einem Jungen zu schlafen, weil sie dachte, danach ginge das Leben erst los. Und dieses Leben war für sie, deren Fehler es sei, oft nicht erst nachzudenken, eine einzige Kette von Misserfolgen, Enttäuschungen, kein Tag, an dem sie nicht betrogen oder enttäuscht worden wäre. Wie die spiralförmigen klebrigen Fliegenfängern ziehe sie das Unglück an. Sie warte dass etwas mit ihr geschehe, sind ihre Worte auf die Frage, was sie vorhabe.

    Diese personifizierte Pechmarie, die wir jetzt gut sechs Minuten kennengelernt haben, in denen ihr hübsches, desillusioniertes und Resigation ausdrückendes Gesicht tränennass wurde, steht auf einer Seine-Brücke, sich noch am überkletterten Geländer festhaltend, und blickt auf den nächtlichen Fluss, über den Lastkähne tuckern. Ein Mann um die Vierzig tritt hinzu, spricht sie an, will sie von dem Schritt abhalten, das Wasser sei nicht für sie geheizt. Der Messerwerfer Gabor (Daniel Auteuil) hat hier schon manch Frau in ähnlicher Situation vor dem Sprung bewahrt und zu seiner Assistentin, seiner Zielscheibe gemacht Doch sie springt, er hinterher, beide landen unterkühlt in einer Klinik, laufen gemeinsam davon, und für beide, für Adèle zum ersten Mal, beginnt eine Glückssträhne.

    Quer durch Europa treten sie in spektakulären Vorführungen auf, atemberaubend die Vorstellung, in der er “blind” auf die Partnerin wirft, er kennt ihre Blutgruppe, aber mehr als ein kleines Pflaster auf einen Ritz in der Haut ist nie nötig. Sie sind kein Paar, mit ihr sympathischen Männern schläft sie, sie genießt nur ihr Leben und auch das sagenhafte Glück am Roulettetisch, an dem er Spielverbot hat.

    Aber die immer noch ziellose junge Frau gefährdet beider Glück durch eine Flucht vom Schiff mit einem melancholischen, depressiven jungen Griechen, frisch verheiratet, eine kurze kläglich endende Geschichte. Auch Gabor hat jetzt das Glück verlassen, Auftritte gehen dramatisch schief, er landet abgersissen in Istambul, und es bedarf einer Brücke zwischen zwei Kontinenten, damit ….

    Das Buch zu dem in Cinemascope und Scharz-Weiß (welch Kampf mit den Geldgebern!) gedrehten Film schrieb Serge Frydman – für eine der bezauberndsten Darstellerinnen des französischen Films, die 1999 27 jährige Vanessa Paradis, die mit 14 Jahren eine atemberaubende Karriere als Sängerin begann, schon in einigen Filmen wie “Weisse Hochzeit” und “Elisa” stark spielte und hier zusammen mit Daniel Auteuil in einer Liebesgeschichte zu sehen ist, die uns mit einem wunderbaren Glücksgefühl zurücklässt.

    “…ein Märchen vom Glück, wo es die Wirklichkeit niemals vorgesehen hätte.” wird die FAZ auf der DVD-Hülle zitiert. Stimmt höchstwahrscheinlich, aber auch dafür gibt es ja Kino, und Patrice Leconte hat nach “Die Verlobung des Monsieur Hire” eine weitere Perle geschaffen, die keine Farbe, sondern das richtige Licht braucht, um wunderbar zu schimmern. man braucht gar keine Reminiszenzen an das frühere französische Kino, schon allein die Szenen, in denen die Kamera auf Gabors fast dämonisch-entschlossenes Gesicht hält, wenn er mit der Linken seine Messer in Richtung Adèle schleudert, zeigen, dass die Intuition des Regisseurs, in Schwarz-Weiss zu drehen, goldrichtig war( ungewollter Gag). Zu keinem Zeitpunkt vermisst man Farbe, und beeindruckend zeigt der Film, wie wichtig beim Fehlen von Farbe die richtige Beleuchtung, das Wechselspiel von Licht und Schatten, von Hell und Dunkel ist. Das ist eigene Kunst, nicht einfach Ausknipsen oder Wegblenden von Farbe, und in dieser Hinsicht ist der Film meisterhaft.

    Daniel Auteuil, der mich erst kürzlich durch seine Rolle in “Ein Herz im Winter” von Claude Sautet mit der ebenfalls faszinierenden Emmanuelle Béart aus dem Jahre 1992 sehr beeindruckt hat und sich hier den zweiten César erspielte, ist viel mehr als ein Ersatz für den ursprünglich vorgesehenen deutlich älteren Darsteller. der die Rolle abgelehnt hatte, weil er nicht ein weitere alter Mime neben Vanessa auf der Leinwand sein wollte .Ohne dass das Drehbuch verändert werden musste, wie wir im ausführlichen Interview mit dem Regisseur erfahren, wurde aus dem Film nicht nur ein Film über das Glück. sondern ein wunderbarer Liebesfilm. “Noch nie war Messerwerfen so erotisch:” urteilt völlig richtig der KULTURSPIEGEL, und eine geschätzte Vorrezensentin hebt eine der beeindruckensten Szenen des Filmes hervor, von der das Titelfoto der DVD-Hülle nur einen blassen Abglanz zeigen kann. Wenn Adèle in einem Eisenbahnwagon mit Holzaufbau, durch dessen Bretterlücken etwas Licht fällt, mit ausgebreiteten Armen steht und Gabor seine Messer auf sie schleudert, sehen wir abwechselnd ihn und sie, und sie bewegt sich fast lasziv wie in tiefster Exstase, was ist dagegen ein noch so wunderbar gespielter Filmkuss? Und was braucht es hier Farbe, die in der Dunkelheit der Szene sowieso zu Grautönen werden würde?

    Eine naiv-spontane junge Frau, deren Leben mit dem ersten Sex beginnen sollte, die ihren Eingebungen folgte und die bisher keinen Tag ohne Enttäuschung erlebt hat, mit tränenüberströmtem Gesicht fast sachlich-selbstironisch ihr bisheriges Leben als Summe jeglich denkbarer Enttäuschung schildert, ein Mann, dessen dunkler Gesichtsausdruck beim Werfen der Messer zeigt, dass auch er sich bisher im Leben nur von Auftritt zu Auftritt und einer unglücklichen “Zielscheibe” zur nächsten gehangelt hat, zwei einsame Seelen, die einander gefunden haben, aber einer weiteren Beinahekatastrophe bedürfen, um zu erkennen, dass zusammenbleiben muss was zusammengehört, Adèle und Gabor, ein für mich wunderbares Filmpaar.

    It seems Monsieur Auteuil is starring in just about every other French film these days… in my opinion, he’s somewhat overrated. He is a decent actor, on par with middlebrow Hollywood working types like Joe Pantoliano and such, but nothing terribly special.

    However, the five stars goes to the movie itself. I like it better every time I view it, which is amazing – very, very few films fit into that category for me. I am also not normally a fan of either black-and-white or “foreign” (read non-Hollywood) films, but something about this one just grabs me in many ways. The deep connection the two starring characters have (it shows on-screen as great chemistry!) is amazing, and the concept of two people being worthless, luckless or hopeless without one another fascinates me, despite the fact I don’t really believe it.

    There are many other reasons why I like this fine piece of cinema, but you’d best discover your own! Get it on VHS if you have to, then get a cheap video transfer card for your computer and burn it onto DVD – you can get MPEG cards like this for peanuts these days (just be sure to respect copyright, and do this for backup purposes only). 5/5, highly recommended!

    Critically acclaimed modern classic of French arthouse cinema, The Girl On The Bridge (1999) is a charming and entertaining romantic tale of a travelling carnival knife thrower and his fateful encounter with the title character, distraught and moments away from jumping into the Seine. A memorable fantasy of love and loneliness, lucky streaks, choices vs. destiny, I found the knife throwing scenes especially thrilling. The superb direction, cinematography, and performances make for a beautifully stylized film that could very much be a modern reworking of the type of love stories popular in the French new wave or poetic realism of the 1930’s, with a dynamic and creative use of B&W photography, eclectic use of music, and magical atmosphere. It reminded me very much of classics like Pépé Le Moko (1937), Hotel Du Nord (1938), Le Notti Bianche (1957), Children Of Paradise (1945), and even Breathless (1959) or Shoot The Piano Player (1960) as well as modern hits such as Amélie (2001), Luc Besson’s Angel-A (2005), and works by Giuseppe Tornatore. Highly recommended. Also recommended: director Patrice Laconte’s other films- especially The Hairdresser’s Husband (1990). Kino Lorber’s Blu-ray is quite nice with an audio commentary and a short film as bonus content.

    I purchased this movie because I am a big fan of Auteuil and also quite intrigued by the use of black and white in this day and age. I was hooked from the opening scene on. The visual beauty of every scene is worth the time it takes to watch this movie, but so is the humor. If you want to know plot details read the editorial review. I am going to stick with my impressions of the movie itself in broad strokes.

    This isn’t just black and white, the use of light, contrast and other techniques make it visually sumptuous. Of course, I grew up in an era when color was just coming out, and I was a teenager when color TV started to take hold, so there is a nostalgia thing also working.

    As for the opening scene, it’s actually quite funny (depending on your sense of humor) and is the perfect book end for the last scene. There are some improbable and even contrived sequences throughout the movie, but those add an element of quirkiness that mimics the very quirkiness of the relationship that develops between the two main characters.

    In the title I mentioned art imitating life. Five years after this film was released I met someone very much like Vanessa Paradis’ character Adele, and at the time I was probably a lot like Gabor (Daniel Auteuil’s character). Like those two characters in real life the person whom I met was in all respects my soul mate and the relationship was every bit as dysfunctional. Still, every time I watch this film the hairs on the back of my neck stand because of how uncanny the characters (but not the events) mirrored an important part of my very real life.

    I’m not going to reveal the plot details, but will say that if you love cinematographic beauty and French cinema – with a touch of absurdity and surreal – you will probably love this movie. If you want action and realism, this is probably not for you. Vive la difference.

    La Fille sur le pont (The Girl on the Bridge), Director Patrice Leconte. This film was a 2000 César Nominee in numerous important categories; Daniel Auteuil won Meilleur Acteur (Best Actor). Vanessa Paradis was so lovely, it would be a shame to miss her in it–and that ending? Wow!

    While totally unexpected, the story line in this movie had you guessing what would truly happen between a girl young enough to be the daughter of the man who saves her. Making a quick buck and just this side of a nymphomaniac, this movie cleverly pitts two very different characters on so many levels together and gives you the impression that without each other, they can not be who they are, but with each other, they think there is more out there. Once given a taste of life without the other, they come to realize the importance of their need for independence, but at the same time, their need for each other and they find that no one can fulfill them like they fulfill each other. If I have written this to seem a little… vague… that is so it doesn’t give away the plot, but lets you know that this is a film worth watching and worth the 91 minutes you will spend in shear suspense.
