A bit too much emphasis on various examples of racism in our military and in our wars from the revolutionary war up to WWII ( a topic I am a bit weary of these days). I would categorize the authors perspective on our entire history as left of center. I found his critique of Vietnam the same old hackneyed liberal left dogmas of clumsy American blundering and excess and no mention of the strategic ineptitude of the Johnson Administration that ceded privileged sanctuaries to the NVA in Laos and Cambodia and failed to take the strategic offensive against North Vietnam and truly fight the war to win it.

I’m not all the way through, and I don’t want to finish. There are some unique facts to be sure, but the overall theme of the first two vignettes seems to comprise of “America has slaves and they used them in battle”. Just not what I was looking for.

I thought this would be a data filled history of war dates and soldiers. This is gritty and disturbing. The writer picks a person in the war and tells their story and this brings an element of suspense and sadness to the story of war. This isn’t all blood and glory. It reads true to war and it’s aftermath.
