Way too many really arcane clues, foreign language references, etc. Plus, the puzzles seemed to have a hidden theme, with no idea as to what it was till you’re way into it. For example, one puzzle’s theme was missing “T”s. Once clue was “A common game fish”, and the answer had 3 letters … or did it? The answer was actually “rou” … in other words “Trout” with the t’s missing. Of course, this was only on some of the answers. Some had one missing T, some had 2, and some had none. So you never knew whether the answer was 3, 4 or 5 letters. And … there was no hint that “missing T’s” was the theme. It wasn’t until I was 75% through the puzzle, had looked up half of the answers, and scratched my head at the non-sensical results, until I realized the T’s were missing. That’s a medium puzzle? No thanks.

These are inventive crosswords with a wide range of themes and wordplay from a variety of “authors”. The difficulty level is pretty consistent, though not perfect. I’ve completed 23 of these so far; one puzzle was pretty easy, and another was so hard I quickly gave up. But all in all, very enjoyable.

I had difficulty following the numbered blocks to fill in the possibly correct answers. Block numbers (ink) was very faint and difficult to read and follow. In addition, the answers in the back of the puzzle were even more difficult to read as the print was barely visible to the eye, even with a handy microscope. On the plus side the puzzle questions/words did present enough challenge but the above concerns needed some eye strain and detracted from any real enjoyment of attempts to solve the puzzles. I will likely pass this book on as a giveaway.

A rewarding challenge! I’m pretty good at NYTimes Sunday crosswords and this is indeed a nice medium level. Difficult, but solvable.

NYTimes puzzles are tricky, and have a theme that can take a lot of time and thought to pin down. If you are not accustomed to NYTimes puzzles, start with the “strictly easy.”

a good alternative to doing crosswords on my phone, I picked this up so I could spend some time not looking at a screen, and am glad that I got the medium level, as I’m not at the higher difficulties at this moment.

I think these are well-described – they are “medium” for NYT puzzles. There are some clever twists, which some solvers like, and some don’t. The puzzles are un-named, but you can often get a hint at the twists if you scan the clues way down in the A or D sections to find the common feature that appears for multiple entries.

I find the hard rated NYT impossible. However, I tend to favor the med to hard of other brands. I’d say that is my level of intelligence. Journalism major in fact. BUT, these NYT mediums are super super hard. I can’t do them. Fair warning for you unless you are a crossword pro

I take this book everywhere with me. They are just hard enough that I need to ask friends to help me get the last few clues in! I would say they’re around Wednesday-level difficulty if you’re familiar with the NYT weekly format.

The clues are often to do with specific US locations and landmarks, as is history and culture – Broadway musicals etc
So, although well put together, I would not recommend for those not 100% familiar with US culture.
