It goes. Back and forth between current time and incidents in the past. It was ok but not a favorite. Interesting ending.

I really had high hopes for this book. I enjoyed the authors first book. It seemed that the plot was just not strong. Spoiler- but why is their father whoโ€™s been married 3 times so secretive of a loving relationship his whole life? The mystery of it was just silly. And the ending was so predictable. The author tried to be scandalous but it just fell flat for me. I see theyโ€™re making a movie about this, figures. Canโ€™t say Iโ€™ll tune in. Rich people floating around trying to figure out what their rich dad is hiding. Nah, Iโ€™m good.

  3. William de Rham

I enjoyed this mystery about the death of Liam Samuel Noone, the thrice-married father of three, and developer and head โ€œof the most sought-after luxury boutique hotel and resort empire in North America.โ€

What caused him to fall to his death from the cliff just outside his seaside cottage in central California? Accident? Self-harm? Something more nefarious? Did it involve the family’s resort business? A competitor? An enemy he might have made?

Those are among the questions two of his adult children, Sam and Nora, set out together to answer. Never mind that they grew up in separate households and have spent no time together; or that Noraโ€”whoโ€™s already succeeded as a โ€œneuroarchitect,โ€ designing spaces to benefit health and well-beingโ€”wants nothing to do with Sam, the company her father built, or any of her fatherโ€™s wealth. What they share is the desire for answers.

It’s a well-written book. There’s plenty of conflict. The characters have depth. Their relationships, and the family dynamics and dysfunction, are compelling. Author Laura Dave thoroughly explores themes of loss, grief, aloneness, and what it means to be left “orphaned,” even as an adult. The New York and California settings are well-described, giving us clear pictures of where we are and helping to involve us in the story. And there’s more than one twist to the tale.

Protagonist, Nora, does engage in lots of internal ruminating about her losses and feelings. Sometimes it adds to the story. Sometimes it drags at it or gets in the way.

But all in all, I enjoyed “The Night We Lost Him.”

It was a great love story along with the mystery but also with twists to both. I donโ€™t want to be guilty of spoilers. Suffice it to say I didnโ€™t figure it out. I recommend it. Itโ€™s a quick read and a little sad but rewarding at the same time.

  6. Laurel-Rain Snow

In this riveting novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Last Thing He Told Me, estranged siblings discover their father has been keeping a secret for over fifty years, one that may have been fatalโ€ฆ

Liam Noone was many things to many people. To the public, he was an exacting, self-made hotel magnate fleeing his past. To his three ex-wives, he was a loving albeit distant family man who kept his finances flush and his families carefully separated. To Nora, he was a father who often loved her from afar โ€“ notably a cliffside cottage perched on the California coast from which he fell to his death.

The authorities rule the death accidental, but Nora and her estranged brother Sam have other ideas. As Nora and Sam form an uneasy alliance to unravel the mystery, they start putting together the pieces of their fatherโ€™s pastโ€”and uncover a family secret that changes everything.

    My Thoughts:

As I buried myself in the secrets and mysteries of The Night We Lost Him, I was captivated. And intrigued.

A family surrounded by mysterious connections and lost moments finds its way in the days following the death of the patriarch. What was going on in his life just before his death, and what answers can they discover?

Nora was the primary narrator, and I felt a connection to her as she took the reader along on her journey. What would happen next? How would she find out what had been missing in her life?

An unbelievable story that earned 5 stars.

I read this book in 2 days – including its release date. I wouldโ€™ve read it in 1 if I had the time. A little disappointed in the ending, but itโ€™s so well-written with a wonderful storyline. Iโ€™ll read anything & everything by Laura Dave!!!

This was my first Laura Dave read and certainly won’t be the last!

As someone who lived in Santa Barbara and the surrounding area for a number of years, I fell in love with the location from the start. Although this is a mystery/thriller, I loved the relationship aspects between brother and sister, children and father, romantic relationships and more.

There is a mystery of who the woman is and that was a complete surprise to me. One that ultimately made sense in the end and brought out the true love story.

I couldn’t put this book down!
