A dual time novel that mainly plays in Germany in the 1930s and 40s as well as 2005. I requested this one because I wanted to know more about the Lebensborn program. I had read several books about it but this is the first one that gives an in-depth look behind the scenes from the perspective of a nurse. Although there are a few tense moments, the book’s purpose is to tell the Lebensborn story and it stays away from some of the more gory details that could potentially have been added. My favorite character is Margarete, hands down. What a lovely and brave woman with a big heart! I very much enjoyed learning more about the program even though I wonder about the use of pain relief during birth. As a European, I know this practice wasn’t common in my country until the late 1980s, early 1990s. The book does give an excellent feel for what life must have been like in these maternity homes for those who did not agree but felt they had to cooperate for fear of what would happen to them or their family. It shows the plight of the “regular” German. It touches on the thousands of children and their mothers who were affected by the Lebensborn program and how this topic has only been really talked about in the last 20 years or so. (I wonder if any of the men involved ever went looking for the children they conceived?) I really liked the dual time perspectives, the way the events developed from different angles and how the author was able to bring all the details together in a solid and enjoyable story. From society’s views on pregnancies out of wedlock to having to give up your baby to the need to work in places one doesn’t want to be as well as what all those Nazi power mongers turned cowards did at the end of WWII. I’m sorry there wasn’t a list of resources at the back. For someone who’s interested in WWII, this is a wonderful book that will help you learn more about this time in history.

What a great emotional story. It’s about the Lebensborn program. It tells the story of one nurse a young woman and a reporter.
The moment I started this story I couldn’t put it down. Going to read the next in this series that will release soon.

The Orphan List is an interesting and sometimes heartbreaking account of a horrible eugenics program in Nazi Germany during World War II. The story is told in two timelines – going between present day and the war. You hear from three points of view and it definitely had me interested in seeing how the three stories would eventually intersect.
The story though interesting initially started slow for me. However, it did eventually get to a point where I didn’t put the book down until it was finished. This is the first book in a series and though this book is a standalone there is still lots left for the author to explore in a sequel.
One of the reasons I love historical fiction is that I love learning about new things. I had never heard of the Lebensborn program and was saddened by what I learned first from reading this story and then by doing some additional research. The author did a good job portraying the horrors of this issue.
Overall, The Orphan List is a well-done historical fiction novel about an awful Nazi program in Germany during WWII. If you are a fan of historical fiction you should definitely add this one to your list.

I have read nearly all of Anns books and this one is just as good as all the others. I loved it.
It tells the story of the Lebensborn programme in Nazi Germany. We get the nurses perspectives on having to be involved in it and some of the poor girls who had a baby for the Fatherland. It really is a wonderful book and I throughly enjoyed reading it.

I so enjoyed reading this book. A great story, an eye opener of the Lebensborn program and the way people acted and their belief system during WWII, and after. I loved the storyline… such a great book. Loved the ending.
Dear author, I would really enjoy a series of books spinned off from this storyline. A book about each girl’s story whom participated in Lebensborn program under Nurse Margarete Weiss’ care. These German ladies watching Kristen’s tv report, also call in and share their own personal experience during WWII in the Lebensborn program and are then reconnected with their child many-many years later. Maybe even the child’s birth father and the story of the child growing up with their adopted Nazi parents and their experience under Nazi-ism and finding out they are adopted through the program.

The background to this story is a grim and frightening eugenics program during WW11. Hitler and Himmler worked to create more pure-blooded Aryan children with SS parents. Blue eyed, blonde and tall young men and women were taken to clinics in beautiful old castles to mate. Girls’ cycles were monitored so they could be presented to the young men at the most fertile time. The resulting babies were given to SS families to ensure the babies were raised with the same fanaticism as their parents. The mothers had no choice. Those who tried to escape with their babies were treated abominably.
The story is told many years after the war through the eyes of a young television journalist. She discovers there is a family involvement.
The story shows harsh and abusive treatment of mothers and babies, especially the less than perfect ones.
I was totally unaware of the program. I needed to read the book as quickly as possible to find some positive scenes. They were few and far between.
In both war and modern sections there are loving relationships. The modern romance is fairly predictable.
A very disturbing but compelling story that should be better known.

So heartbreaking, I couldn’t put this book down I was totally gripped. I believe it’s based on a true story which makes it even more heartbreaking. It’s very emotional full of sadness, anger, darkness, loss, hope. A really great read, I highly recommend it for the historical fiction fan or WWII fiction fan.

The book was easy to follow, despite numerous characters. The story was heartbreaking, but believable due to the reign of an evil dictator and the power he had. What was so sad, was that so many went along with every thing they were told to do. It matter not that many, many people were harmed, in various ways, due to their beliefs and the work they did to carry out their orders.
