Oxford History… so you know right there its a great book. I mean, Oxford was there in the Middle Ages, A big plus is that book it is fully modern, meaning you are not left on your own to translate Latin or Medieval French phrases (you will run into this on older books about this period–go back far enough and English isn’t even an option in England).

As far as this period of history goes, Norman Cantor is my favorite. But this is a great book, it covers most of the important happenings, it goes into descriptions of customs and dress, it is endlessly fascinating for anyone looking for history books covering the Medieval period of European history (aka the Middle Ages, or the now never used Dark Ages–which isn’t an accurate description of the period, although it was an accurate description of the modern mind that wanted to look down on people it did not know, and couldn’t be bothered to try to understand in the context of history)..

I wanted more a story on History than a proper History book. This one fits the second characteristic way better.

A big problem of the book is that it lacks unity. Several people working at the same time on book project may be for good or for bad. This case was a bad one.

I purchased this book for a graduate school class. Well written by reputable scholars and easy to comprehend. Although it is required reading for the course, I am gaining a great deal of valuable information regarding Medieval Europe.

The book is a collection of six essays of approximately 70 pages each, and each essay surveys about four centuries of the Middle Ages, three dedicated to Northern Europe and three to Mediterranean Europe. Overall it is easy to ready and pleasant, but the quality of the essays varies substantially from (in my opinion) mediocre to excellent. The book was written in the end of last century, so several points made by the authors are at least outdated, as is the whole bibliography (which is a natural consequence). Although this book needs and even deserves a big revision and update, it is still a good source of information for the Middle Ages.

What I didn’t know about Medieval Europe could fill a book — this book. Very thorough yet enjoyable reading. It will take many reading sessions to thoroughly study this topic. Probably little known and understood about this great European era in the U.S.A.

This survey of the history of Medieval Europe consisting of separate topical essays in chapter form and is an excellent basic introduction. In such a short volume it is difficult to provide a fully comprehensive look at Medieval Europe, but this book comes close.

It should be read by any reader either embarking on the study in detail of the Medieval Europe or one who has read a couple in-depth treatments but desires an overview.

Overall this book is a solid introduction to some of the most important historiography and is an excellent fundamental introduction. I highly recommend it.

It’s a very good book, although there are some points thar could have been explored in more depht, such as Byzantine society as a whole and the Crusades. But it’s a great work all the same.

I was looking for a nice overview of the medieval period and this is about as good as I can ask for. I studied History about a decade ago focusing on the medieval era and so this book nor the period are completely new to me but I think it’s a good introduction for those who haven’t studied ancient/medieval history before. At a tenner (kindle version), I’m completely satisfied

Great book. Great intro to the medieval History of Europe. Great idea to part it in Northern and Southern European History for every SUB-period of the Middle Ages; thus you ger the six chapters from six different specialists.
Also great summaries in the political and cultural. Somehow good in social and religion; not too much on the economical side.
