I’ve now read 8-9 books by Ben Macintyre and count this as one of his best. His previous books have usually been set in World War II and a little beyond, so this, which takes place in London circa 1980, I thought might be a little bit out of his neighborhood. But, as I was shocked to learn recently from my calendar, the eighties were actually 40 years ago, so fair game for a serious historian.
Macintyre manages a huge cast in this book and he does a great job. I found the story hugely suspenseful, although I have to admit, I am an American and I had completely forgotten the incident and hence did not know the outcome, which took place while our embassy in Tehran was taken by Iranian terrorists. A British reader, might not have the advantage of my ignorance.
The bad guys here are not the pure evil that Nazis provide in other Macintyre books. They are confused, mostly having a WTF are we doing attitude that adds to the suspense. Their original plan was to force Britain to intervene in Iran’s affairs and free Arab “political” prisoners in revolutionary Iran. Do you follow that? Me neither.
A typical Macintyre book would have been about the daring, even desperate raid to free the hostages, but this focuses on, surprise, The Siege, the five days when the British police had the embassy surrounded and were trying to reach a diplomatic, peaceful solution.
The raid itself, which took all of 11 minutes, is meticulously detailed in a remarkable, roughly 50 page chapter near the end that takes you inside the firestorm. It reminded me a bit of the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan.
Overall the book is a great example of a successful use of an omniscient narrator. The reader frequently knows more than any one participant.
Highly recommended. A remarkable achievement by a truly gifted author.

Once again, Ben Macintyre has given us a great book
“The Seige” tells the story of the 1980 taking of the Iranian Embassy in London by Arab militants seeking to compel the Ayatollah and his government to cease mistreatment of Iran’s Arab citizens and make good on their promises regarding the Iranian province of Khuzestan (a/k/a Arabistan).
In straightforward, clear, and dynamic prose, Macintyre tells the tale from multiple points of view. We learn the involvements, backgrounds, objectives, and considerations of the various parties and individuals involved—everyone from the Iranian, Iraqi, and British governments, to many of the hostages and hostage-takers, to the police and military forces on the ground seeking to resolve the crisis. We’re taken into the embassy itself to spend time with captives and captors; to 10 Downing Street for high-level crisis resolution meetings; inside SAS training and planning; and to the genteel Royal School of Needlework that—notwithstanding its delicate collections of fabrics, tapestries, embroidery, and antique thimbles—suddenly became the base of operations for government forces.
It’s a story that was overshadowed, at least in this country, by our own “Iranian Hostage Crisis.” Mr. Macintyre tells it well, keeping the tension high and providing the kind of detail that places readers amid the action. It certainly kept me turning its pages.

The last chapter my heart was racing and I could not stop. This book reads as good as any spy or military conquest novel. I loved it!

Hostage negotiations and rescues are different topics, but this book does a good job of covering how they were handled during one of the most iconic incidents in which both were required. But as the TV ads say, That’s not all. This was the first account of many I’ve read about the event that explained why it occurred—from the treatment of the Arab minority in Iran to the support of Saddam Hussein and well-known terrorist masterminds. Most other accounts simply report what happened, and not the background and motives of the hostage-takers.
My one objection to the book is something I’ve noted in many other works by British authors who write about activities involving firearms. They usually get the descriptions of guns correct, but they just as commonly they know nothing about shooting or ballistics, including the effects of gunfire. A full metal jacket 9mm Parabellum bullet won’t “explode” inside a human body, nor will it necessarily be stopped even if fired from a common handgun, and especially not if fired from a Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun with its usually somewhat longer barrel. The Smith and Wesson model Regulation Police revolver was chambered for the relatively anemic 38 Smith and Wesson cartridge (not the somewhat more powerful 38 S&W Special), and a shot from the gun would certainly not “blow” someone’s head off any more than any other small arms projectile. I wish such well-meaning, but ignorant authors would find true authorities about the subject rather than accepting what they’re told by other ignorant individuals. If they can’t do that, it would be better to not mention such details at all and thereby misinform the other uninformed.

Starts slow and builds DRAMATICALLY. Stick with it if you have a frazzled attention span. The audiobook ( read by MacIntyre ) is even better.
