I am not a Barbara Steistand fan. Papa cannot hear me. I know she’s a big deal in the Jewish community and I remember the running joke on The Nanny of Fran’s obsession with Barbara. She’s not the greatest actress but I guess to be fair the same can be said about Whitney. However both legends were great singers who could hold their own in a movie just like Justin Timberlake in his films. Yet, I love her singing the titled song in the opening scene along with the beautiful montage of Robert Redford. I never knew anything about this movie until Carrie referenced this movie in Sex in the City and did the ending to Big. I think Fran referenced it jokingly in The Nanny to but I was too young to realize it at the time so it went over my head. However, Robert Redford is in his prime was a beautiful man just like Brad Pitt was in his prime especially in films like Legends of The Fall. Two great movies to admire Redford in are this one and Barefoot in the Park even though he did so many movies in his youth. Yet, you fall in love with the characters. You root for the idealistic Katie pursuing the beautiful Hubbell who is completely out of her league and even though he can have any woman he wants, she convinces him to be with her. They love each other, but are completely wrong for each other and see the ever changing world in two different ways. They have many great scenes together and brings the 1940s to life. Two of my favorite scenes are them arguing when they have to go to Washington for the Communist hearings I believe during McCarthism and when Hubbell is on a boat and he has to the name the best years of his life and he keep listing all the years with Katie. They eventually go their separate ways because love is not enough to keep a relationship together. The ending is one of the best endings ever when they run into each other years later after having moved on with their lives married to or in relationships with other people and have one last poignant scene together. Hubbell goes on with his life being the cool, collected, and charming Hubbell with everything coming easy to him and Katie goes on with her life fighting for the causes she cares about. Very obvious they still love each other even though their relationship did not work out and the reminisce about the way they were.
Great movie that sticks with you. The characters are relatable. Their relationship was realistic. I have been a Katie in love with a Hubbell and no matter how hard we tried the relationship didn’t work because we were too different but we are still on good terms with one another and can look back from time to time on the good moments of the way we were then something happens that reminds us the reason the way we were is not the way we are today which is happy and at peace without the headache of being with each other.
Beautiful story that captures a moment in time in two people’s lives that anyone can relate to and enjoy for a couple hours.

Good old-time movie
