During the night it lights up once in awhile kind of just lets you know its there. Battery life is excellent along with features. Although you should not use this rating to base a decision regarding voice feature since I have never used or tried. We have multiple Tivo remotes and they don’t have any problems communicating with correct TV. Easy set up.

For a simple remote it is a pain to setup. First you have to upgrade the UI on the Tivo before you can even try to set it up. After the 3o min to hour long upgrade you then have to fight to get the dongle to work correctly. I setup the remote exactly to the directions but for some reason after every setup any time I would hit a button the menu would freeze. I’d let it sit for about 5 min but after no change I would pull the dongle out and it would work again but then the system would reboot. I fought with the thing for about an hour after which I figured maybe something is messing with the signal or the box so I took the batteries out of the old tivo remotes, unplugged the mini in the next room over, and unplugged the main box. After a few mins I plugged it back in, went through the remote setup again and finally started working and could plug back in the mini and power up the other remote.
Since the setup I have not had a problem with the remote again, the only problem now is the horrible UI design. Luckily the voice control doesn’t work too bad and the Netflix button is a great addition since that’s all we mostly watch besides our recorded shows.
Just know if you plan on buying this remote it won’t be as simple as popping in the batteries, it will take at least an hour to setup if you don’t already have the new UI installed.

I have a 2015 Tivo Roamio OTA. Considered buying the newer OTA model but found this remote that came with an upgrade (Tivo Experience). I love the addition of the skip button instead of just using channel up. Voice recognition seems pretty responsive, though I haven’t used it much yet. Remote response seems a little laggy compared to the old user interface. It was very easy to upgrade, just plug in the dongle and follow the included instructions to pair the new remote and initialize the upgrade. Took maybe 10-15 minutes. A note that you may need to manually set your audio functionality through the Tivo audio settings menu to be able to use the volume controls.
As far as Tivo Experience goes: I quite like the new UI. It’s modern, streamlined, looks nice, not as clunky looking. It’s certainly a big change from the original UI and it might take time for some users to learn how to navigate as it’s not as intuitive as the old version. One small annoyance is that once you delete a recording you’ve finished watching it doesn’t take you back to the folder. Instead it takes you back to the main menu and you have to navigate back to “My Shows” and the folder you were just in. Maybe there’s a setting to change that. I also like that TV episodes are grouped oldest to newest (top to bottom). Don’t have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the list to find the oldest episode.
I’m still messing around with the settings and trying out the new UI but so far it’s great.

I bought this for my mom, who has Parkinson’s, but I think my issues with this remote would apply to any user. After trying it out, I returned the remote for three reasons (1) it’s too complex (2) the voice recognition does not work everywhere in the TiVo system (3) inconsistent labels reduce usability.
(1) Too complex
The TiVo engineers took their already button-laden regular remote and added the Voice Input button. Why not remove most of these buttons and just let users drive the system via voice? This remote doesn’t need a dedicated button for “Guide” or “Netflix” or “record”… all of those are single word commands that could easily be handled with voice input.
(2) Voice recognition does not work everywhere
My mom likes to watch movies via Amazon Prime. Using Voice control “Amazon” she can navigate into the Amazon Prime app, but then voice control stops working until she finds her way back to the main TiVo UI.
(3) Inconsistent labels reduce usability
This seems like a minor point, but it’s a big deal for users who are not tech savvy. On the remote that comes with the TiVo, the circular button in the middle of the directional pad is labeled “Select.” This matches many of the on-screen messages, like “Press Select to continue.” On the voice remote this button is labeled “Ok”. This might seem like a minor point to some folks, but I often tell my mom “read the instructions on the screen” and that advise breaks down when the labels on the remote change.
Don’t buy this remote… it reinforces bad engineering. Do what I’m doing and wait for TiVo to come out with a simple remote that is voice activated, not this complex piece of product development failure.

I’ve read some of the bad reviews, but please know that Tivo has ironed out all the issues and this remote is amazing. You may need to call Tivo to get this working with older minis, but they will give you a few commands to reset the remote and get it working (wish I could remember them, but didn’t write it all down). Tivo has also made updates to the new interface. I agree, the new interface can be a little confusing and takes a little time to learn, but they have done some updates to make the usability better and I do now like it. Most importantly, being able to find shows and channels via voice is game changing and totally worth it — especially at our beach house where we don’t know all the channels.
