This pertains to Fusion 4.1 on a recent MacBookPro. The program does what it is supposed to do but I can’t help thinking BootCamp would work just as well and I may uninstall Fusion to see for myself. It takes at least 30 seconds for Fusion to start running Windows7 and I have to double click twice to get anything to run. Even after increasing installed RAM to 8 and allocating more to Windows some things are slow, especially video. It is easy to screw up the display if you click the wrong icon on the bar. Tech support from Fusion is not bad but not great either, depends on who you get, assuming you call during support hours, 6a-6p west coast time. There is NO written documentation nor is there a PDF on Fusion’s website. When I suggested they write up something I got silence. You can wander through Fusions online database if you have some time to kill but some of the answers I found there were wrong. Like I said, try BootCamp first.

If you want to use VMware Fusion on OS X Mountain Lion (Mac OS X 10.8), you must update to the most recent version of VMware Fusion 4 available before upgrading your Mac to Mountain Lion.
Versions of VMware Fusion 4 older than 4.1.3 do not launch on Mountain Lion.
VMware Fusion 3.x is incompatible with Mountain Lion. It was released in October 2009 and was optimized for Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard. VMware Fusion 3 is no longer being updated for newer versions of Mac OS X.

The jury is still out on Fusion for me. I loaded it onto my iMac. Easy enough to do. Migrated my laptop to it, OK, took a while but there was a lot to move over. Now, four weeks later, it is slower than when it started. I am considering bootcamp at this stage, as I need the windows feature in addition to the iMac side.

This is a nice safe way of running windows programs on a Mac without committing yourself to percentages of disc space or having to start and stop the computer. It runs really well, particularly with my odd combination Windows and Microsoft and Corel programs, all from very different dates. Wouldn’t swap it for anything else – and it suits an non-techie person like me.

In rating these two products, my opinions are based on Experience with Installation, configuration, migration, and conversion on a new iMAC running Lion OS (16 gig RAM) and BOTH Software packages.
Bought the MAC to use in my home office now that there are products out there that will allow me to leverage my Windows software investments (Office 2010, etc) and also run business programs that are not compatible with MAC. My review perspective comes from the following software requirements:
1. Easy to integrate/run Windows software into my new iMAC.
BOTH PARALLELS DESKTOP 7 AND FUSION 4 ARE EQUAL (Didn’t test Windows Server 2008 on Parallels, don’t think it is a supported OS. Server 2008 IS supported in Fusion)
2. Migrate PC into MAC.
Fusion wins here. Had 4 days of lost time trying to get both my windows 7 – 64 bit pcs into Parallels Desktop 7. In addition, the Parallels transporter agent caused
BOTH my pc’s to blue screen on numerous occasions. (never had them blue screen prior) Support from Parallels was insufferable. No resolution to my issues.
3. Run Remote Desktop Software in windows. (need this for work)
Fusion wins here also. Both softwares can launch remote desktop environments. Parallels desktop 7 limited the size of the remote session window to 1028×764 (not
configurable). Fusion ran it full screen as soon as I launched it in windows full screen mode. This is huge for me as my screen is 27″ high def.
4. Ability/Ease of using already created VMWare images from work to do development and testing.
Fusion wins here also. Parallels desktop 7 requires conversion…while Fusion is vmware already, the images just run without any conversion.
So, summary is that for work MAC, this product fits better. I run vmware extensively at my job…and the support is also great. Better than the parallels. For anyone reading this who just needs a good windows integration tool…either product works well. Some of the bad performance reviews I read were older MAC os, and limited RAM. When running TWO computers in ONE machine…RAM is KING. So for laptops limited to 4 gig of RAM, Fusion and MAC systems running together take 3.5 gig on my system. Can understand performance issues there. Ran Parallels for 5 months before scrapping it a few weeks ago for Fusion 4. Memory usage appears to be about the same for both products. Unity mode on both products are AWESOME. Business features I needed were superior on Fusion…so I switched. Oh, did I mention Fusion 4 is less expensive??? Half the price of Parallels Desktop 7.

Although this version is long since superceded (we’re now up to version 7!), VMware Fusion has stood me in good stead over the years and let me run many other OS on my Macs, including Windows 7, Linux and even Blackberry OS10. The updates to the higher versions didn’t cost much either. You need as fast a disk as you possibly can though to run it (and the actual VMs) from though. Fusion can often seem sluggish but that is down to the disk access involved, not the software or your Mac. I got my set up running much faster using Velociraptor drives on the Thunderbolt port for instance; Firewire doesn’t really hack it.

This is a good solution for those of us using OS X and don’t want to bootcamp our Mac’s. I am currently using this software for gaming and video streaming via windows media center to my xbox 360.
I also upgraded my iMac to 16GB of RAM before installing and creating my VM’s. That being said here are some pros/cons I have found with this software.
Pros:
-Interface is very user friendly and crisp looking.
-Creating VM’s and allocating resources(RAM,CPU,etc.) is very easy.
-Swapping between Machines works/looks awesome with Mission Control(OS X Lion).
-Ability to attach/detach USB devices to the VM or Host machine on the fly.
-Graphics hardware acceleration is decent for gaming. Don’t expect full/ultra graphics settings for newer games. I didn’t expect this but I am pleased with what it can handle.
Cons:
-Fusion seems to use as much available RAM as possible. Not just the RAM you allocate for the VM’s. Fusion seems to put all available RAM as inactive rather than free RAM in OS X. This did seem to cause some slow down on all machines.
-The snapshot feature takes way too long to create and delete old snapshots. I tried taking manual snapshots with the VM powered down and it still took over 5 minutes to delete an old snapshot.
-VM corruption seems happen too easily. One example is my VM was not powered down properly and I was unable to repair or boot it. I know when a computer is not shut down properly this can happen but I feel there should be an easier/better way to repair a VM using this software.
-Occasional glitch where I cannot start my VM unless I reboot my iMac.
-Doesn’t recognize my USB audio mixer all the time. Rebooting VM/Host machine seems to fix this issue.
I would recommend this software to anyone who needs/wants Windows on their Mac without using bootcamp. It’s much more convenient starting up a VM than rebooting the Mac just to use windows for a few minutes.
One last thing I would like to mention is the price. I really think you get a good product for a great price.

I use a MacBook Pro and had installed VMware v3.0 a couple of years ago to run XP and some non-Mac software. It worked reasonably well but was generally slow but acceptable. I installed VMWare 4.0 and its a real DOG. My McAfee virus software no longer works. Just an empty white box appears when the software is selected. Additionally, Windows Update no longer will connect to the update site. The application I use under XP (the reason I first bought VMware) now is so painfully slow that it is unusable. Overall, if things are working and you want them to continue to keep working, don’t upgrade.
