As a record of the conception and production of Steven Spielberg’s version of this musical, this sumptuously illustrated book is a nice companion to actually viewing the film. It goes into great detail regarding the planning of the presentation. Like the film, the author spends a lot of time justifying the alteration of the story by Tony Kushner to correct perceived deficiencies regarding the apparent role of the Puerto Rican community in the original film from 1961. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because I found the format of the text a bit difficult to follow- namely, interspersed interviews of a number of actors and production members. Some of the comments made by the actors in lesser roles were of only passing interest to me. I would have enjoyed some additional, non-interview type text providing more detail of the production methodology, including why Mr. Spielberg continues to prefer shooting with 35mm motion picture film, rather than digital. Also, I was surprised that one of the most striking images in the movie is not reproduced in the book, namely, an overhead shot of the Sharks and Jets approaching one another, with their intersecting, horizontally oriented long shadows creating the impression of multiple daggers. In any case, the book is worth a look, especially as it’s beautifully printed. In truth, I did return the book for a prompt refund, given the deficiencies, noted above.

What a book! What a collection of behind-the-scenes photographs, stories and interviews from the set of Steven Spielberg’s magnificent re-imagining of WEST SIDE STORY… which for me, is now the definitive movie musical of the beloved Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein stage play. What I loved most about this book is the story behind each of the songs in the movie and the beautiful photos that accompany them. This is a great companion to all things WEST SIDE STORY. Thank you Laurent Bouzereau for an insightful and beautiful book.

Too bad this film didn’t succeed at the box office but I suspect it will find its audience once it is streaming. This book is a great companion. Gorgeous photos throughout and insightful interviews. Love the storyboards.

This may look like a coffee table book due to its larger physical size but it’s much more. Clearly done with care and well written, the book takes you on a step by step journey, both entertaining and informative, from concept through filming that flows well. Consists of thoughtful comments from many of those who played a part, large and small, in transforming this into a great movie. Attractive photos and drawings accompany these recollections. All in all, a classy way to present how a film gets made. Now at $20 it’s a real bargain.

This is a fantastic movie. The rewriting is very well done. Musical and dance numbers flow, not forced. They are integral to the telling of the story. The actors are excellent, especially Ariana DeBose! She is FANTASTIC.
