M Killian –
The best way to describe this book is Gilmore Girls lite, but harder to follow than the quick-witted banter between Rory and Lorelai. Lily Hopper and her mom, Leda, are basically alternate reality versions of the Gilmores. The main differences are that Lily is a redheaded actress, and Leda is a blond, athletic English teacher at a New England boarding school. Oh, and they both hate coffee! But Leda’s fiance, Josh, runs a diner on campus and sounds a lot like Luke from Gilmore Girls, except he also coaches swimming and is a housemaster in one of the dorms. There’s even a street named Gilmore Lane!
But enough about the GG references. On to the story itself. I love a book that takes place all in one night, and the Jester prank scavenger hunt is fun, but I had a hard time keeping up with what was going on. Transitions between sentences, sometimes even in the same paragraph, had me rereading them multiple times until I figured out if Lily was talking about the present or a different day. The Jester team was always in a hurry, but they were panicking about having ONLY two hours to hide the last scavenger hunt clue across campus. How big is this campus that two hours isn’t enough time? Things like that kind of ruined the stakes for me.
Also, Leda’s anger at Lily participating in the Jester prank, which was to steal the yearbooks, hide them, and send the obnoxious class president on a scavenger hunt across campus to find them, seemed out of place. Maybe it’s because I wouldn’t expect Lorelai Gilmore to be so upset about this and she’d actually defend her daughter, but Leda’s anger at Lily just seemed uncalled for. She was out after curfew and would get in trouble if caught. So what? She’s a “fac brat”, a child of a faculty member, and the rest of the faculty are like family to her. Is she really going to be punished severely as a senior in her last week of school? Again, the stakes felt forced.
The relationship between Lily and Tag was nice, and made me wonder why she waited so long to talk to him. Yes, teenagers aren’t known for their amazing communication skills while dating, but still. If they’re so perfect for each other, why wouldn’t she have talked to him sooner? Why wouldn’t he? I don’t know. It was so obvious that they were going to get back together that I wasn’t all that invested in how it happened. Those parts were just meh for me. I was more interested in the scavenger hunt, which was a bit of a letdown, to be honest. It was fun seeing them hide the clues, but they didn’t watch Daniel, the class president, try to solve them. Except for the one hidden in Lily’s mailbox, where Lily and Leda stayed up late to watch him get that one. (This was after Leda admitted she admired Lily for the prank and got over her unnecessary anger.)
The premise of the Jester prank scavenger hunt was a good one, but I really wish the telling of it had been executed just a little bit better.

Lily Hopper has grown up at Ames, a boarding school on the Rhode Island coast. Her mother is a teacher there, and theyโve lived on-campus, not too far from the coast, for as long as she can remember. But sometimes Lily wonders if she missed out on the whole โhigh school experienceโ by being there and being a faculty child, or โfac bratโโthat is, until she gets an invitation from The Jester, a ritual that happens in every Senior class, where a series of pranks are carried out. Sheโs excited to put her clean image behind her and take part, torpedoed once she realises that The Jester is none other than Taggart Swell, her ex-boyfriend.
Lily and Tag were so in love, so much so that she couldnโt ever imagine doing anything without him on the sidelines. But when his popularity blossomed, so did female attention. Not wanting to have to fight for him, Lily let him go, but she still has feelings, of course. And as The Jester arranges a team of prankstersโincluding friendly faces and close friends of Lily and Tagโit becomes evident that Tagโs feelings havenโt dwindled either. As they dodge moments of almost getting caught and old wounds being reopened, Lily and Tag find themselves taking a trip into the past and everything that went down. But when disaster strikes, Lily and Tag are thrown into troubleโbut is it worth it just to find their way back to each other?
Overall, What Happens After Midnight was a romantic treasure, full of Swiftie gems and a trove of eloquent moments that made my heart fill with bejewelled joy. K. L. Walther has this enchanting way of making her characters relatable and giving us a romance (and dialogue) that feels genuine and raw. I loved how the story also sort-of tied in to The Summer of Broken Rules with Pravika being in both! Truthfully, this was one of the best books Iโve read all year and Iโm already waiting to re-read it again for all the magic feels tenfold. Lily and Tag were a match made in heaven and I loved their story so, so much. I will write anything K. L. Walther publishes forever and alwaysโnothing short of five stars!

totally recommend this book for teens! good mystery and romance!!
This book was extremely bad! Iโm really disappointed, it might make sense for an untrained reader or a younger person but as for me it was a eating of time and money. –
Tutto perfetto !!!

This book is worth reading one time, but generally the whole plot is worse than I thought.

Bought this for my teenage daughter and didnโt realize that itโs chalk-full of Taylor Swift references. And my daughter is a Swiftieโฆsoโฆshe loved it!!! Has gone back and reread it multiple times and annotated it for all the allusions.

Author K.L. Walther knocks it out of the park, yet again! I had a wonderful time following Lily and Tag on a guided tour of memories as they (the Jester and his Fools, including Lily) spend from midnight-until-dawn hiding clues for their Senior Class President to follow in order to recover the stolen yearbooks. Watching what happens next, as they go through the last 2 weeks of senior year, including prom, is lots of fun.
Don’t miss this one! #NetGalley – I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one elseโs.
Geofanne Anderson –
Wouldโve given us a higher review, because I like how it was written and the storyline, but I donโt like how Tagg really took like no accountability for his actions, and the girl took all of it. Kind of just swept over the fact that Tagg knew his girlfriend didnโt like Blair and decided to take a train hours away to go to Blairโs house and not tell his girlfriend. Idc if thatโs your friend or not, thatโs sus behavior. Also, it feels racist to like Seinfeld, but not curb your enthusiasm.

I read this book in two days. I couldnโt put it down. I loved the storyline and seeing lily and Tags relationship rekindle. Perhaps my favorite part was getting to the acknowledgment and finding out the story was based on the authors father stealing his own yearbooks! Such a special book !

I feel like the writer just stripped off Gilmore Girls and made a very weak plot out of it for this book. I believe that for an untrained person itโll be a decent book but for me it was just a waste of time and money.
