Good story developed with the characters. Left many unanswered questions to how things turned out, however. Only one thing seemed resolved. I really wanted to read more to find answers. For example, what actually happened to 6 year old Davina and her mom???

Suzanne Redfearn has interwoven several themes to create this exceptionally thought provoking novel.
The main theme is that of the ‘Butterfly effect’, or the ripple effect if you like; how one small insignificant event can have far reaching consequences. In this case it is a small fault in a child’s floatation device. The consequences ripple across oceans to threaten harmony in a family and in a small rural community.
There are several other themes which underpin the main storyline but are no less significant – the different ways people cope with grief and how this impacts a family, the clash between capitalist and alternative lifestyles, the effect of trauma and PTSD on relationships, the possibility of having a meaningful life despite disfigurement – and that is just some of them.
There are many moral/ ethical issues raised in this book. Is it ok to accept lying even if it results in the loss of life and property? Is it acceptable to undermine your partner’s authority if it benefits your child? Are the press/social media too invasive?
And there’s more. The philosophical questions raised thread their way through the book with different characters taking different perspectives. The author doesn’t necessarily give you all the answers. In some cases she plays devil’s advocate.
The use of metaphors is strong in the book, in particular the butterflies which the young girl believes to be the personification of her sister. This is her way of coping with grief. There is a dog whose stoic behaviour mirrors that of a wounded veteran, all of whom show us how life can go on despite loss and trauma.
Above all there is hope, a belief that time heals everything eventually if we only give it a chance, that money and material possessions are no substitute for memories and meaningful relationships. It is a novel for Everyman.

The characters are strong and well formed and are so believable. The storyĺine is really good and moves along pretty fast. I could not stop thinking about it. It is based on a family who suffered a tragic loss, and how they tried to process it and move on. Also how they made a stranger suffer as they were. It just made me think about the characters, wondering how are they going to make things right. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a thought-provoking read.

This is a novel that asks us to sit a moment and think about what’s important in life. Whilst we all need a means to survive, we also have others means which allow us to thrive.
A thoughtful, moving book, and so much more than a family drama.
The story deals with loss and guilt, and the beauty and necessity of kindness. In my experience, generosity is too often abused and used. I love that this quality is celebrated in this intricately woven tale, in which you walk with and breathe with and live each character as they make their journey through a tumultuous time, whilst they also seek redemption and a way to move forward.
Again, as with other books I’ve both read and listened to at the same time, the narration sometimes differs from the written words, which I wish publishers would take more notice and care of. Due to a cataract covering most of one eye, I’m relying on narration more than ever before, and I love when the narrators bring the story even more to life than the amazing writing.
A five-star read I recommend highly.
