Got this for my father who is in his 70’s and bored. It’s not reading that you have to really concentrate on. Quick little blurbs about sayings we’ve all heard and wonder “where did that come from”?…. So – he can pick a page, read one or 2 items and put it down til next time.

I know, everyone has different opinions about books, but I had high hopes for this one that didn’t materialize. The stories on phrase origins are good, but there’s not nearly as many of them as I had expected.

Maybe I should have looked more closely and then I might have realized it’s geared toward kids. I got it for my husband as a stocking stuffer and was surprised when I saw it how elementary it was. Now that we’ve read it, we’ll give it to a young niece, because it is a worthy book.
We learned some things, which is fun, because word and phrase etymology is fun. An improvement, though, would be if the book had an index or at least a more meaningful arrangement of the phrases for when one wants to quickly look up a phrase spur-of-the-moment.

As an educator, I believe Scott Matthews’ “Why Do We Say That?” will be an excellent resource for helping to equip my students to understand the idioms and jargons that are used by those they are working with. A recent article by HR Magazine pointed out that “work jargon often isolates younger employees.” The article stated that younger employers actually have made mistakes on their jobs, or lost out on opportunities at work because of misunderstanding an idiom or work jargon. This book will be a fun, painless avenue to introduce my students to a colorful part of our language that has previously been closed to them.
