My motivation for getting a 12-string was hearing “Walk Right In” on the Fifties Channel 5 Sirius Radio in my car. I’ve played guitar for 50 years, and own several, but never had a 12-string. I didn’t want to break the bank as I am clearly not a professional musician, but I still wanted the best quality I could afford. I’ve owned a Yamaha APX-4A, the 6-string cousin to the APX700II-12, since 1996, and it is a great guitar. It sounds great amplified or unamplified, and the key component for any guitar: it stays in tune. Since I’ve never had a problem with the 4A, I chose the Yamaha 12-string over some other brand names in similar price ranges.
The guitar was not shipped by Amazon, but by a partner, so the shipping date was not exact, and in fact arrived 2 days after the promised date, although still within the broad 2-week range they initially set. Guitars are usually shipped as a box-within-a-box, but this one was just shipped in the original Yamaha box, and arrived in perfect shape due to good packing by Yamaha (there were several indentations on the cardboard but no marks whatsoever on the guitar).
The finish of the guitar is flawless, and it was playable right out of the box. One or two strings were a tad flat but overall I was impressed as I’ve bought more expensive guitars that needed a complete tech setup before they were playable. The frets are clean, there is no string buzzing at all. The action at the 12th fret is a little high for my tastes, but I don’t plan to do much soloing down there anyway. Bar chords are hell on 12-strings, so as long as the action on the first 5 frets is low, then it works for this situation.
After a month, I can say that I love this guitar. It’s amazing how much better such real 12-string classics like “Walk Right In,” “Wish You Were Here,” and “Won’t Back Down” sound on this guitar. I’ve even played the first few notes of the Byrds’ “Mr Tambourine Man” and it sounds authentic. All in all, it’s given me a new reason to play every day, to learn all these great songs. The thinline body of this and the 4A don’t really take away too much tone, they both sound very strong and you can always plug either of them in. The 12-string actually includes a rubberized soundhole cover so you can minimize feedback when playing amplified onstage. I haven’t tried that out yet, I don’t think I’ll be onstage anytime soon, but it’s a nice touch.
Also bought the HC-AG2 hardshell case from Amazon, which fits the 12-string perfectly.

Glue all over a fret and splashed on the fingerboard. I trusted Yamaha quality based on prior experience of another 12 string I owned and didn’t notice the QC Failure until changing strings to ones I like.

I am not returning because I have tools and skill to clean up this QC mess. I have attached pictures before and after fixing this. Yamaha guitars delivered to customers in this condition is simply unacceptable.

Other than my profound disappointment with Yamaha QC, the guitar has a better feel than dreadnought sized guitars. The satin finish on the back of the neck is a nice touch that makes the neck very playable. The preamp is large and has nice features. The sound is to my expectations.

The guitar is fine. The fact that there is no case/ gig bag, makes it false advertisement. If you want to deal with honest suppliers, go elsewhere.

Timely shipped in single cardboard box. No packaging issues. Craftsmanship and finish is exceptional. Needed a set up as action was a little high. Came with 10’s but I put on Ernie Ball 9’s 12 string set. Plays great after set up. Neck has a good feel to it, not too small like a Rick,IMHO.Thin body makes it a little more comfortable to play. If you are a solid body electric player, this guitar is for you. Luthier recommends to tune 1/2 step down to reduce stress on bridge. Or tune down after playing, pain in the butt, or play with capo. He recommends this for all hollow body 12 strings.Sounds good unplugged as well as electric, built in tuner a plus. Overall for $400 very pleased, would recommend.

Arrived packed in a box within a boxโ€”perfect condition, no dings or dents in either box. Very well set up on arrival: the action is smooth and easy, the strings symmetrically spaced and the nut set just right. Arrived was roughly tuned within an octave; fine tuned it with the onboard tuner and it sounds great! Next day, only minor retuning required. I also have the Yamaha APX 700 six string, and this twelve stringโ€™s neck is even more comfortable, plus the concert-style body is very comfortable to sit and play. Still working on perfect fingertip placement for clean dual notes, but the adaptation is easier than Iโ€™d expected. The strings are fairly light and the action low enough that thereโ€™s little extra stress. Totally pleased with this purchase!

This is a smallish 12 string. The neck is maybe a cm or two shorter than a full sized dreadnaught, which lessens the stress on the strings and therefore the neck . It is the easiest 12 string I’ve ever found to play. I’ve had a couple of Ovations, which were also easy to play and an expensive Taylor that had great tone, but was more difficult. I’ve been playing guitar for maybe 60 years. Where’s the time go? The sound of this Yamaha is big and full despite it’s smallish thin-line body. The smallish body also makes it easier to hold than a dreadnaught. Workmanship is excellent and From my point of view, it is an really excellent value. I wouldn’t even try to play other 12 strings with my slightly arthritic fingers. Despite being furnished with a sound hole cover to minimize feedback, I haven’t found feedback to be a problem and haven’t used it. I haven’t performed in a hard , echo-prone room yet. and may use the sound hole cover when I do. I’m very impressed and would strongly suggest you buy it. Thanks Yamaha. Thanks Amazon.

For a 12 string this is easy on the person playing it. Rings out loud and resonant to me considering it’s size.
