I’m a loop artist and this guitar is ideal. This Yamaha is light weight with a beautiful.bright tone. I put in a pure mini pickup and it sounds superior to my other acoustic with the factory installed pickup. Frets are inset lower so you can set the action for smooth lead playing. It has a thicker neck too for firm gripping technique. It’s not an all mahogany wood guitar, mostly spruce but very good tone. So glad to have a Yamaha back in the family.

I bought this guitar after a gave my FG820 to my daughter because she loves it. The 820 is the best sounding guitar Iโve ever heard. I love the mahogany sound like the 820 had for back and sides and I noticed that the FG850 has a solid mahogany top also. Itโs a beautiful guitar, has great projection and that mellow mahogany sound. Plays great just like the 820. Would definitely recommend. Great bang for the buck!

Haven’t played guitar for 30 years or so but wanted to get back into it. This has worked out to be a really good choice for me. Had a classical guitar but it was more difficult to play with the wider neck and higher action. This Yamaha has a great sound, good action, and looks GREAT. Now if I can only get my fretting hand to cooperate….

the mahogany gives it a nice classy sound. not as bright or loud as the spruce but I like it for vocal accompaniment. also easier to hold bar chords than my last guitar so that’s a big plus. it looks like it always wants me to pick it up so I do…mo’ practice.

A solid mahogany top, beautiful workmanship, charming sound and intoxicating beauty that will lead you into the guitar. Mellow and deep lows with an exacting midrange with bright but not overwhelming highs. Made from all Mahogany, this solid top guitar conjures soft jazz, quiet ballads and exacting accuracy for the occasional classical piece. Itโs definitely a steel string guitar, but let your hands and heart control the soft tones that only Mahogany can provide. Mother of pearl inlay, newly designed scalloped bracing for the top design allows for truer tones, resonance and intonation. The stock tuning keys are accurate and snug, and produce no interference with the typically thin strings trusted by Yamaha. I selected .10 to 52. Nicely satisfied and proud to add this to a 38 year old collection of Yamaha guitars. The fit and finish is as nice as expected and will be a conversation starter. Highly recommend.

Guitar 1. Amazon 0. Second bad experience with musical instrument packaging from Amazon.
The Yamaha FS850 is a beautiful looking, playing and sounding guitar, so the reviews online were right, and Iโm glad I have one. Yamaha seems like an underrated guitar brand. Itโs fit and finish is surprisingly great for a cheap guitar. It played virtually setup out of the totally shredded box. This guitar is quiet but has a focused resonance that records very well. It has a folky woody sound thatโs not overly bright. Love that.
Amazon and Yamaha bad packaging:
WARNING!!!!! Itโs not the guitarโs fault- but this is for Amazon- the box the guitar came in looked like it was run over by a folk lift. Or ripped by a Tyrannosaurus rex. It was torn and retaped in several places. I donโt know if it was returned or the box alone was damaged. It did not happen in transit as the outer box had no damageโฆ. So Amazon packed it this way. AndโฆNo fragile markings. No paper or foam. Ridiculous. Amazon- do better. Wtf? Amazon seems to not care about musical instruments. I purchased here as I had Amazon gift cards. Also- Yamahaโฆ wtf? This is the box you used to pack the guitar? No reinforcement or foam? Do better Yamaha.
Miraculously the guitar itself doesnโt appear to be damaged, but perhaps deep micro cracks could have happened which could later shorten its life. Will evaluate during the return grace period. Hopefully not as I love this instrument. My advice is to consider carefully before buying fragile instruments from Amazon. Guitar seems very durable given this wrecked box.

Nice guitar build quality is impressive, and of course most importantly sounds great.

I like everything about this guitar it is one of the most beautiful guitars I know of it didnโt need a setup it plays easy and the sound is amazing the FG 850 is the best guitar I ever have played or owned I recently bought a guitar hand made in Canada it is very nice but needed a setup I have money so I also wanted the FG850 I didnโt want to like the Yamaha it is made in China but if you can only afford 1 guitar this is it it is equal to other guitars @ 4 times the cost this is my humble opinion take it for what it is worth

The all-mahogany body and top along with the scalloped bracing are evident in the sound. I saw reviews elsewhere that it wasn’t a great leap over the FG830. The FG830 is a wonderful guitar, but the FG850 has greater projection and the warmth of tone is extraordinary for this range of guitar.
I did slightly adjust the truss rod and restrung with higher quality strings.
I am so happy with this purchase.
Play one at a local music store!

This is my second guitar and I’m very happy with it. I use a 3/4 size made by a different manufacturer for learning and then move to my Yamaha to play songs once I master them. It has a nice, bold sound and is all the casual/intermediate player should need. Glad I bought it and I’d recommend it to others.
