Two of my sons used this trumpet to make district honor band. One of them continued to use for high school marching band and jazz band.
Had no problem with the valves-
If the valves stick, you might want to try oiling them as is required of any trumpet!

My son loves his new trumpet. This is his second one and he seems to think it not only looks better but plays better.

Absolutely immaculate smooth trumpet. We had a friend, who is a professional trumpeter, look at this and he was absolutely blown away by the price we paid. Worth the cost. Japan makes excellent top quality products and this is by far amazing.

I bought this for my daughter in her second year in high school. She has played since 6th grade and really wanted a trumpet of her own. This is a very nice trumpet and has worked well. Came with a nice hard case as well. Very satisfied. Have had it for a month so far and will try to update my review later.

First impression is very very good. It came very well package from Yamaha…even though amazon just threw it in a bigger box with some packaging paper. Case is very classic and professional looking from the outside. Inside has a good right fitting section for the trumpet but it’s upside down from when open it (valve button faces you.) One thing I notice is that there’s a smell of the material use for the cushioning on the inside. Everything was wrap in pastiche too; the case, trumpet, and the mouthpiece. Came with instructions for care , cleaning cloth, valve oil, and slide grease.

The trumpet is very nice externally. Looks plated…but if you take out any of the slides or look into the end of the horn opening…you’ll see where that silver shine ends. It’s far enough down where it would generally not be seen. Has two water release, a slide stopper for the 3rd valves, and has a finger and thumb ring for your left hand. The valves has pearly white buttons with black velvet on top of the cap inside has a copper like spring with a white plastic spring catcher. It came oiled and ready to play though you might want to make sure everything is tighen and screwed securely. Sound seem on point but I’m a beginner and will let you know how it is in time. Feels nice and light. Mouthpiece seem like Yahama standard (1184 is marked on it). Trumpet is stamp that it’s made in Japan and the case is made in Indonesia…

I purchased this for my 10 year old son for when he starts 6th grade next year. Let’s start with what I see people complaining about. Sticky valves and slides. Here’s the deal. If they worked fine when you got it unless you dropped the horn or threw it against the wall the valves and slides will work fine as long as you maintain the instrument regularly. Buy a cleaning kit with a snake and a rod to feed a soft cloth through the valve casings. Don’t eat or drink anything but water when you use the instrument. Don’t come on here complaining about sticky valves if you are drinking a latte or a coke when you play the horn. What do you think is going to happen to your car if you pour a coke into the oil? Brush your teeth and rinse before playing. The horn is well machined and I can tell you the custom Bach Stradivarius 43G, 180L horn that was made for me in 1997 for $4600 had sticky valves if I didn’t clean it almost daily. I probably clean it once for every 10-12 hours of playing time. Maintenance is cleaning the valves, casings, and slides. Run a wire snake through the horn once a week and clean your mouthpiece with a mouthpiece brush. Oil the valves and I like to use DCT cocoa butter with a couple of drops of oil on the slides to keep them nice and loose.

The horn itself plays well. I used my Back 1 1/2 C mouthpiece on both the Yamaha and my 43G. To be honest I found the Yamaha to be similar to the Strad ML 37 horn I had in high school. It’s not as forgiving as my 43G or have as dark or rich of a tone (as expected) but I didn’t have any tuning problems. The D slide needed a little more extension to get D and C# in tune but for my 10 year old that might mean he needs to use the thumb slide. I played Charlier etudes one and two on both horns. The mid register was solid. I did frack a few times around E to G but like I said it was similar to the Bach Strad ML 37 I had in high school back in the late 80’s. If the player is playing true I found the horn pitch to be in tune when hitting resonant frequencies (ie you hear the overtones in your head.) It has a nice bright sound in the upper registers. I felt like it has a little more resistance than the Bach Strad ML 37’s but I expected that as well and I think that is actually better for younger players.

The horn was nicely packaged and polished so my son was all over the sleek and shiny. It came with a silver polishing cloth that I have him use to hold the horn in his left hand. We’re not running a drum and bugle corp here so I think we are fine without gloves and the leap pipe between first and second valves in my experience is going to wear on the lacquer no matter what you do. The valves are a little light and bouncy for my taste but it didn’t really affect me when I tried to play something a little more technical (double tonguing major/minor scales or triple tonguing chromatic scales.) It came with a Yamaha 11B4 mouth piece which feels like a Bach 7c to me but the rim bite is not as hard as a Bach or as soft as a Schilke. It’s right in the middle and works well for my son. He has a tear drop embouchure and the rim fits naturally to his mouth.

I feel like this horn can last him into high school. If he sticks with it and excels this horn would make a great horn for marching band and Jazz. I would likely buy him something a little more orchestral/ wind ensemble oriented to compliment this one at that point. I don’t feel like the horn is going to be a limiting factor be before then.

My sons trumpet instructor saw and heard this trumpet today during his lesson. When I told him where we bought and the price, his jaw actually dropped open. This instrument was extremely well packed. Beautiful case. Obviously brand new and in plastic covers. Could not be more pleased
